Lyrics

One night after dinner I sat down with my father
He handed me a bottle of beer
Well, we started out talking, joking and laughing
But I could tell there was something he wanted me to hear

Then the room fell silent, and he sat quiet
And took another drink of his brew
He cleared his throat and emptied his soul
And said, “Son there’s something I need to tell you”.

“Through your whole life I’ve stood by your side
And picked you up when you fell
Well, I watched you grow strong when knew all along
That you would always excel
Well I wish I could continue this journey my son
but my time has come”

My eyes filled with tears, and I dropped my beer
And the bottle smashed on the floor
And I fell to my knees and begged God
“Please don’t take my father away from me”

Then on my shoulder, like the weight of a boulder
His hard working hand did rest
And in his deep baritone, that shook my bones
He said, “Son, this is your final test”

“Through your whole life you stood by my side
and I never let you see me fall
And I tried to be strong but I knew all along
That eventually this day would come
Well I wish I could continue this journey my son
but my time has come.”

Well I rose to my feet and kissed his cheek
And looked him straight in the eye
I said, “Don’t worry Dad, I understand.
Everyone needs to rest sometime”

“You taught me to stand tall, and put in my all
And no job is done, ‘til it’s done
So when you leave this earth, please know your worth
You were the best father to your son”

“Through my whole life you stood by my side
and you picked me up when I fell
You let me grow strong but it’s you all along
Are the reason why I excelled.
We’ll continue this journey again
When my time comes.”
