From the recording The Deal

Lyrics

It was late one night
And I was walking alone
Lost and bewildered
Depressed and cold
The town seemed deserted
And like me, its lost it's will
Then I noticed a light on
In the old church on the hill

I made my way up
And passed through the gates
The grass was overgrown
No one's been here as of late
As I entered, the church door creaked
Like a cry for help
And I felt like a stranger
Like an infidel

By the candle light
The confessional stood
Inside an old priest waited for sinners
So hell, I figured I would
As I walked down the aisle
My boots left footprints in the dust
And I could smell the damp wood
The precious metals were covered in rust

Well, I sat myself down
I took a breath and begun
I said"Good evening Father"
He replied"How can I help you son?"
It's been a long time
Since I confessed my sins
I've tried to ignore it
But it's burning within

Many times I've cursed the Lord
And used his name in vain
When I see all the injustice in the world
All the evil and pain
Well, are we his entertainment?
Or has he punched out?
Or just left us alone
To try and figure it all out?
Well, I'm sorry I turned my back
But he turned his first
From my point of view
His plan needs to be reworked

There was a moment of silence
Then a soft gentle sigh
He said"This confessions not yours, son
No, this confession's mine
For too long I've left my sheep
Alone in the fields
And the wolves have all circled
And I've allowed them to kill"

Well. a warm breeze blew in
And the candles went out
I stepped out of the confessional
And I looked around
I opened the priest's booth
There was nobody there
And alone in my footprints
I knelt down for a prayer
